Gordan's Pixion adventure

Pixion is a company that values graceful solutions, and our approach internally is no different. We want to grow as engineers and the best way to do that is to surround yourself with only the motivated and the intelligent. End goal? Well, becoming a status symbol among development agencies seems worth our while. What Pixion is doing can hardly be described as revolutionary. After all, we are together to get some satisfaction in knowing that we’re doing something meaningful.

What is the favorite part about working for Pixion?

I enjoy the whole design and development process we have at Pixion, the processes we implement are tailored to individual projects and their respective clients because we understand flexibility is a must when developing a usable product.

As a Software Engineer I enjoy turning vibrant design sheets and UX proposals into a fleshed out product for our client's userbase. My confidence is regularly boosted by constructive code reviews I receive from fellow colleagues, by our client's feedback on weekly sprint calls and monthly one-on-one's with my team lead.

We take pride in our open office culture where everyone enjoys the ability to share any issues - work related or otherwise, without reproach. We revel in our achievements, but we also share our burdens as a team.

How do you spend your time outside of the office?

I like riding my bike through the countryside, the wind rushing through the spot where my hair used to be. It's important to both stay active and have some alone time, where I can put my brain on stand-by.

A year ago a bunch of friends convinced me to try playing Magic the Gathering and I've been a passionate player ever since. Damn cardboard crack, as we call it.

Afterwork drinks and occasional barbecues with friends and office peeps where we get to kick back and get some vitamin D in.

My Magic playgroup decided to give D&D a shot, see what all the fuss is about so looking forward to our first session as Morloque the Warlock, a former circus owner seeking revenge against those who burned it down after striking a pact with my demonic patron.

Why did you join Pixion, and what has kept you here?

I used to be a freelancer and a friend, a colleague at Pixion now, reached out to me saying they have a project they're working on and were looking to get more people involved. Pixion was just getting started and I was available at the time so I agreed to join the project, initially as a contractor working on the mobile counterpart for the platform in question.

I soon realised that Pixion is the real deal, standing out among the common company rabble out there in the wild. The folks at Pixion had processes in place to make sure things run smoothly, a dedicated QA team that actually communicates with engineering, code reviews to make sure the stuff we write gets a sanity check and ends up being maintainable in the future, sprint demos with the clients who enjoy regular updates on the progress that was made and what they can expect in the future.

In a couple of months, I ditched my freelancer gig and applied for a full-time position.

As far as the "what kept me there" part is concerned, it's not really applicable since the thought of leaving never occurred to me.

When are you the happiest?

• When I'm riding downhill.
• When I respond with a Heroic Intervention to a Wrath of God.
• When my food gets delivered.
• When I feel the Sun on my face.
• When I'm reading an excellent fantasy novel.
• When I'm kicking back with my friends.

What have you gained from working at Pixion?

I got the chance to use the technologies I wasn't familiar with in the past or the ones I considered a shaky aspect of my engineering toolbox. Since feedback at Pixion is so prevalent I was able to make decisions on what aspect of my skillset to focus my attention on in order to better myself. I became a part of a team that's working together.

In short, a realization that I'm not alone in my job.

How do you define success in life?

Achieving independence privately - being your own person. Not being afraid of relying on other people professionally. Having people around you that you care about.

Some people think you need to choose between a career or being happy, I don't think they're mutually exclusive.
