About
We developed a React Native mobile application for smart-home heating management, enabling homeowners to control and monitor their heating devices from a single, intuitive interface. The solution is built on a custom communication scheme that ensures reliable command exchange between the app and the in-house heating modules.
Challenge, approach, and impact
1. Converting legacy desktop functionality into a modern mobile UX
The original FORHIT heating system was controlled primarily through wall units and a desktop-style interface. Recreating all features: room control, schedules, modes, diagnostics, graphs in a mobile app required redesigning complex workflows into intuitive screens that still matched technician expectations.
2. Ensuring reliable real-time communication with heating hardware
The app depends on stable communication with the FORHIT controller, signaling status, executing commands, and reading live temperatures. Implementing this communication scheme on mobile required refining the protocol, handling connection issues, and maintaining instant feedback indicators.
3. Making advanced configuration accessible but safe
The app includes technician-level screens like IP setup, group definitions, assigning modules, and setting current limits. Balancing usability with system safety meant designing protected flows that prevent misconfiguration while keeping expert features fully available.
