About
Modernization of the ERA operating system for Bridgeport National Bindery using the Strangler Fig architecture pattern
Challenge, approach, and impact
The challenge: an architecture problem, not a language problem
It would be easy to frame ERA as "ancient software we rescued." That wouldn't be true, and CTOs can smell that kind of story. ERA was already built on .NET. The problem wasn't the language — it was the architecture. The original design coupled everything together tightly enough that: Shipping new features had become slow and expensive. Each integration fought the existing structure instead of plugging into it. The monolith resisted scaling under load. Peak publishing seasons
