Challenge, approach, and impact
Manual Interpretation of CTG readings was slow
Analysing CTG data manually requires significant time and clinical effort, creating potential bottlenecks during labour where timely decisions are critical. The absence of automated support meant healthcare professionals had to dedicate substantial attention to reading and interpreting strips, slowing workflows and diverting focus from direct patient care.
Subjectivity in analysis could lead to inconsistent conclusions
Without a standardised analytical framework, CTG interpretation varied between practitioners. Individual experience, fatigue, and cognitive bias influenced readings differently, resulting in inconsistent assessments of fetal well-being. In high-stakes labor scenarios, this variability introduced unnecessary clinical risk and undermined confidence in the decision-making process.
No standardized decision support tool
Healthcare professionals lacked a reliable, evidence-based tool to guide CTG interpretation. Decisions relied heavily on individual judgment with no system to cross-reference signals against clinical benchmarks or patient-specific factors such as gestational age and maternal profile, leaving critical gaps in consistent, informed labor monitoring.
Documentation had no efficiency to record, share, or archive findings
CTG findings and clinical observations were recorded through fragmented, manual processes with no unified system to capture, share, or archive results efficiently. This created challenges for continuity of care, clinical audits, and inner team communication which increase administrative burden and raising the risk of important information being lost or mishandled.
