Challenge, approach, and impact
Challenge
Developing an AI companion application requires fine-tuned neural networks that are able to interact with users in a human-like way. At the same time, the AI must not show any toxic behavior, spread hate speech, or give harmful advice. In addition to that, to keep the application running, a certain business model should be developed to monetize the service and cover the development and maintenance costs.
Solution
Innowise has developed an application that creates a companion directly on the user’s mobile device. The mixture of AR technologies and artificial intelligence provides users with personalized experiences they are aiming to achieve from interacting with their companions.
Artificial Intelligence
The core is a custom NLP engine powering personalized companion sessions that deeply understand conversation context for human-like interactions. Fine-tuned CV handles 3D model positioning via smartphone cameras and picture recognition to enrich context. Companions learn user interests/personality, track mood changes, and provide supportive advice, blurring physical/digital boundaries.
3D Models
Innowise Design Studio created extensive 3D assets for mobile/AR use: customizable companion hairstyles/clothing for personal appeal, plus decor (furniture, plants) for their virtual space, reflecting both companion and user personality to boost engagement.
Monetization
To cover development/maintenance costs, we've implemented dual monetization: In-app currency for assets/datasets, where users customize companions (music nerd, gamer, sports fan) and enhance looks/digital spaces. Subscription unlocks advanced AI models (free tier uses basic models). This balances accessibility with revenue while deepening personalization and engagement.
User Data Privacy
To comply with the regulatory requirements and keep user data safe, we implemented an array of processes for anonymizing and encrypting data before it’s used in any way. Each user session is held separately but the application servers don’t track any personal data.
