The legacy monolithic system was capped at 2,000 concurrent users. UppLabs delivered a strategic microservices migration in just 2 months with 2 developers, achieving 3x performance improvement and unlimited scalability via a new Public Gateway API. Engagement ongoing since 2018.
Challenge, approach, and impact
Monolithic Legacy System at Capacity
The existing Tax1099 platform was built as a monolith and could only handle 2,000 concurrent users. During peak tax filing season the system experienced critical performance degradation, directly impacting thousands of accountants and businesses relying on IRS filing deadlines.
IRS Compliance Under Continuous Change
IRS regulatory requirements for informational returns change annually. The legacy architecture made it extremely difficult and costly to adapt forms, workflows, and validation rules to new IRS mandates without risking system-wide instability.
Zero Downtime Migration Requirement
Tax1099 could not afford any platform downtime during the migration given that users depend on the system year-round and especially during Q1 and Q4 peak filing periods. The transition had to be invisible to end users.
Limited Internal Engineering Resources
The client's internal team lacked the specialized expertise needed to architect and execute a microservices migration at scale. A trusted external partner with deep system architecture experience was needed to lead the transformation.
