HairMax needed to extend their team with mobile development expertise to automate scalp analysis and treatment tracking for trichologists. UppLabs engineers integrated directly into the client's workflow, building custom dermatoscope integration, automatic hair loss detection from clinical images, on-device PHI storage with zero external transmission, and automatic prescription PDF generation with Shopify checkout via QR code.
Challenge, approach, and impact
No Vendor Documentation for Medical Device Integration
The dermatoscope manufacturer provided no API documentation or integration support, only their own closed application. UppLabs had to reverse-engineer the device communication protocol from scratch to enable custom data capture within the HairMax app.
PHI Storage Without External Servers
Client scalp images and treatment data qualified as sensitive health information requiring strict data protection. The architecture had to store all PHI exclusively on the doctor's device with zero transmission to external servers while still enabling reliable backup and continuity of care.
Automated Clinical Documentation Workflow
Doctors needed a way to convert dermatoscope images and diagnosis directly into prescription documentation without manual data entry, while maintaining a clear audit trail linking each prescription to its source clinical images.
Bridging Clinical Workflow with E-Commerce
The client wanted prescribed treatments to be purchasable directly through their existing Shopify store without breaking the clinical workflow or requiring doctors to manually direct patients to a separate purchase flow.
