About
SourceBoard is an online procurement platform designed to connect U.S.-based small business suppliers with buyers in the defense industry, including government agencies and prime contractors. Acting as a centralized marketplace, the platform enables buyers to post procurement needs and projects, while small business suppliers discover and bid on these opportunities.
Challenge, approach, and impact
Two-sided UX without confusion
Government/prime buyers and small suppliers needed one product that feels obvious to both. The platform had to make roles, actions, and next steps unmistakable for first-time suppliers while supporting complex buyer workflows.
Secure, scalable bidding in real time
Bids had to submit, validate, and update live with a complete audit trail—no race conditions, no ambiguity—so awards could withstand scrutiny.
Compliance-first onboarding
Identity verification, eligibility checks, and document controls had to be built into registration and team setup, fully aligned with federal procurement standards.
Clear free vs. paid paths
Free registration should lower barriers for small businesses; paid bidding must unlock value (tools, analytics) in a way that’s transparent and fair.
Discovery & Requirements
Define roles, artifacts, and decision points across the public procurement lifecycle; document success criteria and compliance constraints.
Dual-Experience Design
Deliver UX/UI for buyer and supplier workspaces, a shared design system, and accessible language that first-time suppliers can navigate.
Core Procurement Modules
Plan posting, bidding, evaluation, and secure messaging with API contracts and data models ready for future integrations.
Risk, Security, Compliance
Set RBAC, audit logging, document controls, and verification touchpoints as table stakes.
Scalable Cloud Foundations
Establish multi-tenant deployment, SLOs, and environments for steady growth in users and data.

It wasn’t just about building another platform — we were enabling small businesses to compete on a level playing field in the highly complex world of defense procurement. Designing a solution that balanced usability, compliance, and real-time bidding logic was both challenging and exciting. It felt great to contribute to a project with such a meaningful mission.“
