The #FakeHunter initiative, a project in partnership with the Polish Press Agency and GovTech Polska, resulted in the development of a user-friendly web platform, a browser extension, and a mobile app. These tools enable the public to report and verify suspected SARS-CoV-2 misinformation through advanced algorithms. This suite of tools has proven to be an indispensable asset in the fight against fake news.
Challenge, approach, and impact
Managing the Misinformation Surge
The pandemic sparked an exponential increase in misinformation, especially about SARS-CoV-2, leading to significant public health risks. The challenge was to develop a tool that could swiftly and accurately debunk this fake news while being user-friendly and accessible to a broad audience.
Promoting Universal Participation and Accessibility
To be effective, the platform needed broad user engagement. This called for not only motivating public participation but also ensuring that the #FakeHunter tool was universally accessible, reaching users regardless of their technical abilities or device preference.
Ensuring Optimal Performance under High Traffic
Given the importance and potential popularity of #FakeHunter, we expected high traffic to the platform. We needed to develop a robust system that could handle a large volume of interactions smoothly, catering to two distinct user groups - the public reporting fake news and the fact-checkers reviewing these reports.
