Time to meet the Senior React Native Developer at DO OK, Hugo!
Why did you join DO OK, and what has kept you here?
From the very first contact with a recruiter I was told about DO OK's mission and values.
Any given company is expected to have them and let you know about them, but the difference in here was that they actually told me in practicality how they conduct the company's business.
So I knew that this would be a place where I would feel satisfied knowing that my work would make a difference.
My wife and I love going out on city breaks. A year ago we went to the city of Avignon in France after I read a book about the Black Plague... yeah, my wife also thought it was weird.
In your opinion, what are the hallmark traits of a great Senior React Native Developer?
The ability to quickly adapt and take action and attention to detail. We know how software development can be: tools require updating, some feature turns out to be a tad more complicated than we thought or the classic "it works on my device".
What really sets some devs apart is the ability to work on the fly and have a good grasp on where to look for the correct answers.
Moreover, is imperative to never forget that we never really stop learning and that a better solution might be out there.
How has DO OK helped you in your career development?
My colleagues have been a great source of information and guidance. It's so rewarding to work alongside talented people that can teach you something new by simply pointing in the right direction.
Our multidisciplinary team makes sharing knowledge effortless and everybody is always keen on showing what they've been working on.
Do you have any hobbies, go-to weekend activities, or long-term passion projects you’re working on?
I've recently picked up tennis! My wife introduced it to me and now it's our go-to weekend activity, plus we watch tournaments together and cheer for our favorite players. I like that it keep me moving and is really rewarding to see how I'm progressing bit by bit.
I'm an avid video game player too! Currently working my way through an extensive back-log but whenever I have some time I like to keep tabs on the tools available for their development. One of my life goals is to develop and publish a game.
I love cooking/baking! It was hard to find good Mexican food where I live so I had no choice but to take matters into my own hand. Turns out I'm quite ok at it.
What is the favourite part about working for DO OK?
I can really tell that they value us, the work we do for them and the clients for which we work for. This is intrinsically tied to the company's values and it is reflected in the overall satisfaction of both the team and the clients.
There's always room for improvement though, and DO OK is very invested in figuring out how they can help us be the better version of us we can be in a professional, technical and personal sense.
Before working at DO OK, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
I worked at a recreation center for kids in Iceland. It was a fun experience getting to know the language through them while doing stuff like going out on hikes, having baking contests and swimming at the pools.
I never thought of myself as a kid person particularly, but I ended up quite liking that experience and now I look fondly at it.
