Time to meet the Lead UI/UX designer at AtlasApps, Lara!

What are your primary responsibilities and what does your day-to-day look like?

I perform the following activities by designing the app:

1) Determining the target audience

2) Identification of the users' necessities, which will be solved by the future product

3) Benchmarking and research of the competitors' best practices

4) User journey creating

5) Wireframing and prototyping for preliminary user flow testing

6) App visual concept created based on the brand identity and readability principles

7) Development of a flexible and scalable design system

8) Execution of layouts and their adaptation for mobile and tablet devices

9) Review design on prod (on live)

Additional duties:

— Communication with the development team at all stages

— Design support in the development process

How do you spend your time outside of the office?

I believe it is necessary to maintain a work-life balance in order not to burn out at work. I try to find time for alternative activities. I do anything that allows me to forget about work tasks. It can be walking, reading non-fiction literature (about the brain, evolutionary psychology, etc., listening to music (I'm an audiophile), or music parties.

It should be recognized that today's world requires constant improvement in the skills of professionals.

So I explore the system design of famous brands in my spare time. This is my source of inspiration. I am always happy when I manage to find an exciting and elegant way to organize the design stuff.

I am also a part of this The Noun project, whose goal is to create a graphic icon for any existing noun on the planet Earth(and not only). Sometimes I take my time to contribute there.

How has AtlasApps helped you in your career development?

Any company is first of all the people who work there. I am very grateful to all the teammates with whom I have already worked. We learned a lot from each other in the process.

I am lucky that I work with responsive people who are ready to answer all my questions if I need to. The developers on my team told me a lot about the technicalities of translating design into code. This allowed us to optimize the processes associated with the design. Long communication with business analysts allowed me to improve my UX skills.

Each new project is a challenge, and by taking on it, I open up the possibility of learning something new.

What is the best vacation you’ve been to?

That was a couple of years ago. And three of my friends went on a bike trip across Ukraine. We wanted to test ourselves, we weren't sure if we could pull it off, but we succeeded. We covered about 2,000 kilometers in a month. It was a completely different life, almost like a TV show Man vs. Wild with Bear Grylls. We rarely stayed in hotels; camping was our new home. And every new day we set it up in a new place.

Sometimes, it could be in the mountains, sometimes on the banks of a river, once managed to spend the night in a mint field. The travel process was full of surprise and unpredictability. It's mesmerizing. I think we managed to live outside the digital environment. It was a great opportunity to discover who you are and what you want. We only used smartphones for navigation.

We rested well, tightened our physical form, met and fell in love with Ukrainian culture and nature, and became close to each other.

Describe what you were like at age 10.

I was a pretty quiet child who knew how to find activities to entertain myself. I preferred to do fine art and read books in my spare time away from school. Thanks to my parents for providing me with beautiful, well-illustrated encyclopedias. I had a huge collection. I guess it made me a curious person with a passion for researching everything.

Also, I remember that I had a constructor, which I spent many wonderful hours playing with.

I did well in school; all subjects learned easily, except for linguistics.

What drew you to UI/UX design? Have you always worked in leadership roles?

When I was a child, my parents brought me to an art studio. There was a delightful teacher who was completely open to the world. She allowed all kinds of even crazy experiments with paints and paper. Sometimes we would come home completely covered in paint. :) I think it was her way of teaching children not to be afraid to be free and creative. I was too keen on this kind of activity and fell in love with visual art forever.

My school education made me realize that I was good at the exact sciences and that I had an analytical mindset. Even though I continued to study fine art, I was not sure my future profession would be related to it. As a result, the design profession has become a compromise.

When I was a student at art college, I wanted to get into real-world tasks as soon as possible. I had the opportunity to work part-time as a web designer in my final education year. Even then, I realized that it was my thing.

It seems to me I have found my place. I enjoy the process of finding a solution to some issues, considering all sides of the subject. I like interacting with developers and brainstorming to find the best idea for implementation. The ability to create visual concepts is a nice addition to my responsibilities.

I'm sure that a person can only do well what they like.
