Why did you join DO OK, and what has kept you here?
I joined DO OK after many discussions with one of my colleagues, who worked for the company. I've heard many positives about the company's mission, working conditions and general atmosphere. My goal was also to work with foreign clients to utilize my language skills.
I stay because all of those promises are being fulfilled, and I have been involved in multiple very interesting projects, allowing me to both use the skills already obtained and expand my knowledge.
There's time to be serious
What are your primary responsibilities and what does your day-to-day look like?
Currently, I'm working with a project that matches my skill set very well. I start my day by reviewing the monitoring services for cloud environments that I'm working with. Later I have a standup meeting with the PO and other team members, and the rest of the day is dedicated to a mix of feature development and bug fixing.
Depending on the situation, there usually are some business, team management or architecture related meetings that require my attention. Occasionally, I take part in similar meetings at DO OK, I also conduct candidate interviews or take part in some company strategic meetings.
What is the favourite part about working for DO OK?
My favorite part about working at DO OK is the fact that I have real influence in the company and can see my contribution having a positive effect. I feel a great mixture of support and trust from the organization, which results in a mutually beneficial synergy. I know I can lean on my colleagues if any of my problems go outside my area of expertise, and they know they can rely on me in the same way.
What’s your next step, or a few goals you’d like to accomplish in life, or while with DO OK?
Planning ahead is my first nature. I have many exciting plans, both professionally and privately. Recently, I became a homeowner and an amateur farmer. This new setup complements my work-life very well and provides a good opportunity for mental rest, after spending time in front of a computer screen.
Professionally, I try to develop a very broad skill set. In most cases, if there is something in my project that is not something I have experience with, I try to learn from other team members as much as I can. If not for the skill itself, then to be able to hold a meaningful conversation on the topic. For example, I'm learning Angular to support a team member and conduct insightful code reviews.
And there's time for fun
How do you define success in life?
Success for me is something each of us has to define for oneself. That definition can also evolve with time. My most important criteria defining success is not losing the pleasure in what I do. I feel successful when I see that I reach my goals steadily and still have something to look forward to.
A detailed, ambitious plan for success can be a source of many frustrations, so instead I try to take things at my own pace. I generally feel accomplished, and I am working very hard to keep that up.
What did you want to be when growing up?
One of my first memories is sitting in the living room with my parents and having a discussion with a friendly blue screen of the Commodore 64. My dad used to type one side of the dialogue on the computer, which used an early speech synthesis software to converse with me.
I have many fun memories from those times, and unsurprisingly, the first time I've been asked who I want to be in the future, was also the first time I learned about Computer Science as a profession.
