Time to meet the Senior full-stack developer at OLDBOY, Helena!

Why did you join OLDBOY, and what has kept you here?

In my early years as a junior developer, I met our current CTO David González Polán, who was a Senior developer at that time and he selflessly helped me learn and improve in the software development field. When he asked me to be part of his new team at Oldboy, I felt more than honored.

What has kept me here for 7 years is not only the good spirit that the whole team always has but the technical challenges and excellent conditions.

Typical Helena's day at work 

What are your primary responsibilities and what does your day-to-day look like?

As a Full-Stack developer, my main responsibilities are the development and maintenance of digital solutions for our customers. So I contribute to both the front-end and back-end development processes, which I love by the way.

My day-to-day can look very different because it varies every few days depending on which part of the project I need to focus on. So one day you can find me coding the user interface of a website or mobile app and the next day, structuring a database or developing a RESTful API.

How do you spend your time outside of the office?

I've been in front of a computer ever since I can remember. This tool has given me tons of hours of fun and education throughout my whole life. So even after work hours, I spend a lot of time doing different activities related to technology, games, and coding.

My other greatest passion is reading books so I recently founded a Reading Club online to share this great experience with my closest friends, but everyone is invited. We have already read "The problem of the three bodies" and "1984".

What’s your next step, or a few goals you’d like to accomplish in life, or while with OLDBOY?

I used to be very athletic, but I gradually lost this good habit through the years. It wasn't until the hard restrictions during the COVID-19 quarantine, that I noticed how out of shape I was. Fortunately, my weight is still balanced, but I am decided to improve my eating habits and start walking more.

What's your favorite line from a movie?

The iconic "I am no man!" line is my favorite.

In one of The Return of the King's most famous scenes, the Witch-king arrogantly proclaims that no man can kill him, to which Éowyn replies "I am no man!" and immediately finishes him off.

I feel identified with Éowyn due to some repressions that women still face nowadays and watching her epic scene makes me emotional.

Do you recall any embarrassing fun moments at work?

Yes, we received an incident informing us about a bug in a province selector. A client wanted to choose his province which was "Navarra" but it didn't appear on the list. When my colleague discovered that instead of "Navarra" we were displaying "Naconstra", I realized that it was my fault. While I was developing that project, I replaced all "var" texts with "const" and sadly I didn't review this correctly. It was a funny moment, but I learned about being more careful during replacements.
